Moment of History in Historic Redmarley D’Abitot A moment of history in Gloucestershire’s historic village of Redmarley D’Abitot was held at the village hall to witness the launch of Redmarley Church Heritage Society used as the occasion to invite those attending the event to join the newly formed Society. Hilary Morton introduced the Society’s aims and objectives, which are to encourage support and funding for the restoration of St Bartholomew’s Church, in particular the Tower, that require urgent remedial work. Mr and Mrs Jakeman provided vital photographs, which show the extensive damage, and the challenges, which lay ahead! Redmarley is steeped in history having survived invasions, civil war battles, plagues and the Black Death, wars, but never defeated the village enjoys a measure of fame with ghostly sightings, notable visitors such as the Dymock poets, Sir Edward Elgar who married Caroline Alice Roberts who lived at Hazeldean House, Redmarley, the famous actress and singer, Lily Elsie who married Major Bullough and moved from London to Redmarley’s Drury Lane (how appropriate!) and other of the family members lived in the fabulous Down House at Lowbands. The Village enjoyed commerce (once supplying gloves to Dents in Worcester), tourism and gorgeous countryside with stunning views of the Malvern Hills. In his morning sermon, the Rector Reverend Andy Sewell alluded to the importance of working together for community and Church, and Hilary said that the campaign to preserve the Church for future generations is of vital importance, and is a community project, for everyone to become involved!
